What is a Professional Leadership Coach?

A professional leadership coach is a trusted mentor who can help you identify and uncover what keeps you from reaching your fullest potential.  It is a one-on-one relationship that provides a supportive and non-judgmental space to help you create what you want for yourself.  You can find a leadership coach to help you strategize and acquire the tools you need to achieve your goals.  It consists of steps to help you identify and reframe your thoughts and attitudes.  It can also help you break negative habits, acquire new methods of identification, and take action to achieve your maximum potential!

What Types of Leaders have Leadership Coaches?

Leaders from all types of business work with professional coaches to help attain their goals. Leadership coaches work with people in all areas of their life including relationships, career, finance, health and more.  Working with a business coach is not limited to any type of person, but is best for those who want to take initiative in their own professional life.  People who get a leadership coach are committed to a more fulfilled life and are willing to do the work needed to get there.

How will Leadership Coaching Help?

The results will vary depending on what brings you to a leadership coach.  If you get a leadership coach to help you out professionally, coaching can help you make your current job more gratifying, gain better focus on managing your work, and market yourself more effectively.  If your reasons are personal, you can find a coach to help you improve your working relationships, resolve ongoing negative behaviors, improve your communication skills, and grow more resilient.  With leadership coaching you can live a more balanced and enhanced life, and achieve your potential!

How do I Determine if Coaching is Right for me?

To determine whether you or your company could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what you would expect to accomplish in coaching.  When an individual or business has a fairly clear idea of the desired outcome, a coaching partnership can be a useful tool for developing a strategy for how to achieve that outcome with greater ease.  Since coaching is a partnership, ask yourself whether collaboration, other viewpoints, and new perspectives are valued.  Also, ask yourself whether you or your business is ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes.  If the answer is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way to grow and develop.

What Happens in a Leadership Coaching Session?

Each session is tailored to the client and will vary based on individual needs. In the beginning, we will discuss what you are committed to accomplishing through our work together and we will begin to create a plan to achieve your goals.  Periodically, the coach will give you assignments to help direct your progress.  We will work together to acknowledge obstacles, explore alternate perspectives and celebrate successes.  With the conclusion of each session, we will revisit your goals and evaluate the next steps that are needed to achieve these results.

Do I really need a Leadership Coach, can't I just do it by myself?

Leadership coaching can take you above and beyond your own personal limitations - think blind spots.  More often than not, people try to achieve their greatest potential, but don’t even realize what stands in their way.  A coach can offer an unbiased and objective perspective, and can help you realize your patterns and habits.  Most leaders experience that they are more efficient when working with a professional leadership coach and that this provides the opportunity for them to better realize their potential.  Leadership coaching can make your dreams attainable and will give you support and encouragement along the way.

How is Coaching Different from Therapy?

While the leadership coaching we provide can be therapeutic, it is not therapy.  Coaching is distinct from traditional therapy because it is not designed to address psychological issues.  While emotional issues may arise, the primary focus of leadership coaching is to help you identify your goals, achieve them, and develop constructive habits and skills.  There is little emphasis placed on the past with coaching, but instead the focus is on creating what you want now and in the future.  By design, in coaching the client designs action steps to take in achieving desired goals.

How is Coaching Different from Consulting?

Individuals or organizations retain consultants for their expertise.  While consulting approaches vary widely, the assumption is the consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions.  With coaching, the assumption is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.

How is Coaching Different from Mentoring?

A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience.  Mentoring may include advising, counseling and coaching.  The coaching process does not include advising or counseling, and focuses instead on individuals or groups setting and reaching their own objectives.

How is Coaching Different from Training?

Training programs are based on objectives set out by the trainer or instructor.  Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are set by the individual or team being coached, and supported by the coach.  Training also assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum.  Coaching is both less linear and without a set curriculum.
